When Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Viral Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, views the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, like many local residents, detected loud noises ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” she explains. She left her home, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the direction that all the others was trying to escape from, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He moved towards something that certainly every instinct would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Chaos

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many instances of courage in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and paramedics treating numerous those hurt.
