Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
