Gus Atkinson further complicated England's injury problems when he left the ground during Saturday's play of the fourth Ashes Test versus the Australians. The right-arm seamer felt a problem in his hamstring after the final ball of the fourth over during the morning session. The England team reported Atkinson had experienced "tightness" and was to take time on the sidelines in order to be assessed "in the coming hours". The series decider of the series beginning on 4 January starts on Sunday, 4 January. The visitors have been without strike bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and Jofra Archer because of a side injury on the current trip. A replacement bowler was called up as cover for Wood. His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, managing only a handful of scalps. He was dropped for the Adelaide match, before being recalled for the Melbourne Test in the playing XI. Surrey's Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, taking two wickets in Australia's first innings, before adding 28 with the bat among just a trio of teammates who passed ten runs. After bowling one over in Australia's second innings, he came back on Saturday morning and had nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper. Unfortunately, at the end of that over, he bowled a variation to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring. Atkinson was brought back for the fourth Ashes Test having missed the previous Test.
