Much like Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the prior day, Manchester City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This scoreline marked back-to-back league losses for Skinner's side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the league leaders with their title hopes severely dented.

United’s capacity to juggle domestic and continental football with a small team has been a frequently analyzed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this capability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they looked tired throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no such workload worries. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a show of the power from City whose potent forward line controlled and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This placed City firmly in control and left United struggling. Before this match, the away side had let in just a handful in this WSL season but they fell apart in the face of the hosts' attacking flair.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything early on, exploiting the space left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her passes were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had several sorties ahead, their long-ball tactic giving them choices in the wings but they could not challenge the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, teasing their rivals and trying to lure them of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh goal from a cross of the season.

They increased their lead with two more goals just before the break. When Rose was permitted to drive through the center from defense, the field widened for City. The influential Casparij received possession on the wing before delivering a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a quick change in possession saw Hemp given the opportunity to fire a attempt home from range.

Second Half

The primary change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the match. Former City player Jess Park came nearest, striking the post, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to record a single shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to overcome any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and United to position them in a commanding position after the opening fixtures.
