The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War. Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies. "The aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday. He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel". Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel The national leadership delayed state memorials until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day. A remembrance service for the families of people who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels. Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country. Ceasefire Talks in Egypt Meanwhile, both sides' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the agreement. A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations indicated that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt. The representative said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the agreement. He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the two sides. Essential Matters in Discussions A lasting ceasefire The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza The withdrawal of troops from Gaza Measures for assistance provision After-conflict administration of the area Public Reaction In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home now and until every captive come back none of us will be secure." "When we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to heal," she continued. Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive. Activist one woman remarked: "We must do any agreement necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe." Surveys now consistently show that approximately 70% of the population prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted. Palestinian Situation At the site of the music event, mourners came together to remember the victims. From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on. In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr areas and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west. "As the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, explained. "Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me all night." "Continuously we check the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us." Health Crisis Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district. Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis reported additional fatalities had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, medics reported. The region's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
