Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
