Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a return to football management, pointing out that it would be difficult to recreate the higher calling he felt as the national team coach.

Southgate indicated his aim to channel his attention toward engaging the next generation and countering what he labeled a dominant downbeat story currently found in the country.

Pursuing Fresh Opportunities Beyond The Sport

Speaking on air, the manager was questioned on talk linking him with open coaching positions in the English football and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Role Models

Leading up to the release of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, Southgate shared that he is deeply committed about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his tenure as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate believes that his journey coaching England, during which the team transformed from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, Southgate remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

He insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often highlights disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

The manager’s new release, Dear England, is expected to provide additional perspectives on guidance and public spirit based on his distinguished time in football.
