Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Criticism

Figures from across the political divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

This is a vile and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from Within Party

Some GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of another individual.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
