Cameron Norrie secured the biggest victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a lost first set to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win marks Norrie's maiden victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Huge. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in the record books to beat a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I lost in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just tried to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my career, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the most confident competitor in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive elite tournament successes, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's young career.

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he sailed through the first set. However, Norrie slowly worked himself into the match by executing with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into lengthy, physical points. His unceasing steadiness and dependability slowly left its mark.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz served well but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. Alcaraz, in spite of his incredible accomplishments, is yet to solve how to display his best tennis indoors.
