Anthony Barry Shares The Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach featured in League Two. Currently, he is focused supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from player to coach started with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11
flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression stands out. Starting with his first major job, he built a reputation for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the top according to him.

“All begins with a vision
But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a methodical process so we can for optimal success.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms such as "break".

“It's not time off or a pause,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he states. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To develop a process enabling productivity in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry says. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To make it light, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

His desire to get better is all-consuming. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he brought Barry over away from London to rejoin him. The Football Association see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
