🔗 Share this article A Account of Unexpected Generosity: When a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Floor During 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book accommodation upon arrival, however once I got there, a large conference was happening and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out. As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of the casino, believing I might spend those hours somewhere that was open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing an interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible. The world needs more individuals with such compassion. It seems I seemed lost as a young woman saw me loitering in downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I explained my situation and right away she offered I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at the local university – which was perfect, given that my the important interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: one sandwiches she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and somewhere safe and secure to sleep. In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she took being a woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my own unawareness and was oblivious to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain deeply appreciative. Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her good deed abundantly. We could all use more people like that woman.
